Wings of Pride began as a quiet act of defiance and grew into a declaration of identity, courage, and creative freedom. As my first-ever competition entry at the Festival of Quilts in 2024, it resonated far beyond anything I imagined. Visitors lined up to pose in front of the sculptural wings — claiming a moment of flight — and soon the piece was appearing across social media, shared and celebrated by makers and allies alike.
Since then, the wings have travelled widely, shown in multiple exhibitions both as a work of textile art and as a vibrant expression of queer joy at Pride events. They returned to the Festival of Quilts when The Quilter’s Guild of the British Isles chose to feature them on their stand, reaffirming their place as a symbol of resilience, visibility, and unapologetic creativity.
Every curve, colour, and stitched line carries the story of rising above criticism and choosing to stand taller, brighter, and prouder. The piece invites others to unfurl their own wings and take up the space they deserve.
